Matt & Rach, just a typical Aussie couple who fell in love with a hobby and turned it into our full time jobs!
In 2018 we started our trip around Australia in a van that we converted into our home on wheels, and in 2019 we came across the unique town of Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is an outback town in the centre of South Australia about 9 hours North of Adelaide, this town is what got us hooked on finding Opal!
In 2020 Placid Gems was created, we moved to Coober Pedy full time, started mining for opal in the cooler months of the year and we taught ourselves the art of jewellery making.
A few years later we expanded on our mining machines, expanded our jewellery knowledge and we now work full time as opal miners and jewellers in Coober Pedy! Placid Gems has now ventured out into using other crystal pieces in our jewellery but Opal will always be our number one focus.
